Critical Role Campaign 4 Unveils the Soldiers Party

Since the launch of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master the talented storyteller has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a colorful mix of personalities, and a gripping narrative featuring celestial beings, evil spirits, and sinister influences increasing in influence within Dol-Makjar.

Note: Spoilers for the third episode of the new season are included.

The Combat-Oriented Party Unveiled

The third episode finished on a huge suspense moment and revealed the first table of heroes who will branch out from the main group to begin their own adventure, separate from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table includes the determined fighter (brought to life by Travis Willingham), the agile character (Laura), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), Wicander (the player), and Kattigan Vale (the actor).

The Reason for Division

Given an extensive roster, it was clear from the outset that maintaining everyone at a single group would be impossible.

That’s why, the opening chapters of Campaign 4 serve as an Introduction, weaving together the personal journeys before dividing into three smaller tables: Warriors, Schemers, and Explorers.

Characteristics of the Warrior Group

According to Brennan Lee Mulligan, the combat-focused party is for adventurers who enjoy a traditionally charged fight-heavy story mode where non-violent answers are scarce.

Initially, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander might seem mismatched, but the events of episode 3 demonstrate why these five characters are ideally matched for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

First, the group knows exactly where to head next after a intense opening clash with the enemy group.

Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose passing kicked off the campaign’s events—manipulated the enemy for his personal gain, breaking into Thjazi’s hideout, striking the rogue, and stealing all the magical artifacts to auction.

Casimir then settled his debts and escaped to a fortified location in the remote area, above the urban center, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.

Individual Reasons

Additionally, each member has a personal reason to depart the metropolitan area:

  • The agile hero, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, desires revenge.
  • Kattigan is familiar with the region and cautions that it is a hostile place.
  • The warrior and The healer, having defied his family’s wishes to eliminate Teor and instead freed him, have no safe haven.
  • But, their status as prominent individuals in House Halovar could assist the group reach locations they normally couldn’t.
  • Moreover, The fighter swore a eternal obligation to Wicander for his deliverance and will now follow him anywhere.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the authorities that rule the setting for a range of causes, making remaining behind dangerous:

  • The agile adventurer and Kattigan are known criminals.
  • Tyranny and The healer betrayed the influential house and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
  • The fighter is marked for death by the family.

This results in them little choice but to head to Timmony in pursuit of Casimir.

Future Episodes

From the recent installment’s follow-up content, we discover that the combat party will not appear the following episode, leaving the rest of the cast members to form the Seekers and Planners groups.

Audiences can look forward to finding out which adventurers will be assigned to which table in Campaign 4’s final introductory chapter, available to watch on next week.
